Frequently Asked Questions

Your guide will discuss location options with you.  We will do our best to take your travel time into consideration, but fishing conditions will ultimately dictate where we go. We have multiple options for fishing destinations including

  • Tuckasegee River
  • Little Tennessee River
  • Holston River
  • Watauga River
  • North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail
  • Cherokee Trophy Waters
  • Green River - Exclusive fishing on private waters

  • Weather-appropriate clothing. This region is considered temperate rainforest,  so bring a rain jacket just in case.
  • Lunch or your preferred snacks (guides will provide water, soft drinks, and light snacks).
  • A hat or cap.
  • Polarized sunglasses for seeing fish and rocks (even inexpensive ones are great).
  • Fishing license.
  • Cash to tip your guide.
  • Excitement for a fun day!

  • Bottled water, soft drinks, and light snacks.
  • Rod, reels, and flies.
  • Boats (for float trips).
  • Boots and waders (for walk and wade trips).
  • A helpful attitude and plenty of expertise.

Sure, if you have your own gear like boots, waders, rods, reels, etc., you are welcome to use it. Feel free to rely on our guides for those details if that is easier for you.

Yes. This trip is customized for your preferences, so we can fish whatever gear you prefer. Just let your guide know your preferences.

Rain typically does not impede the fishing unless it is a torrential downpour. Your guide will make the determination if conditions are safe for fishing or not. We are happy to raincheck your trip or issue a full refund if your guide decides it's not safe.

Most of the areas we fish are relatively easy to access, but some rivers have slick banks and rocks. Your guide will ask questions regarding your level of mobility. Please be honest. Your guide will make sure that the areas you fish will not exceed your abilities. If you have concerns about mobility, please chat with your guide. and we will make accommodations.

Our wade trips have an age limit of 7. Drift trips have no age limit.

How the Process Works

1) Considering booking a trip but have questions, or just want to chat with one of our guides?

Give us a call or send an email. We are happy to chat with you about fishing with Katala Outdoors and how to get your trip scheduled!

2) Book Your Trip

You can easily book online, via email, or just give us a call. Please call for availability if the date you requested online is not allowing you to select it. Please call or email to confirm availability.

3) We’ll work with you on the details of your trip

After you book your trip, one of our friendly guides will get in touch to discuss details such as who is in your party, ages, preferences, fishing location, options, etc. We’ll ensure we have just the right trip for you and your party.

4) As the big day approaches, we’ll stay in touch

A few days before your scheduled fly-fishing trip, your guide will reach out to confirm trip logistics, fishing location, etc., to ensure everything is on track.

5) Meet your guide

Your guide will meet you at the time and destination you’ve agreed upon.

6) Have an awesome time on the water!

Your guide will take you to a great area to fish, and will help you with technique and with gear.  We want you to succeed!

Fly Fishing Walk and Wade Trips

We provide options for 2-hour, half-day, and full-day walk and wade excursions in beautiful western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Every adventure is customizable and comes with an experienced guide for your private trip. After you book your desired trip type and date, we will collaborate with you to select the most appropriate destinations for your fly fishing vacation.

Fly Fishing Float Trips

Our fly fishing float trips in the scenic areas of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee can be fully customized to fit your needs. One of our knowledgeable guides will accompany you on your private outing, which can last 2 hours, a half day, or a full day. As soon as you book the trip you want to take and when you want to do it, we’ll start working with you to figure out where you should go for the best fly fishing.

Scenic Float Trips

Want to float without fishing?

Western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee are home to several stunning rivers, and we offer scenic float trips along many of them. Half-day and two-hour excursions are available, and private guides are provided for each customized trip. After you book your guided river excursion with us, we’ll help you decide where to go to see the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Fly Fishing Classes

Hone your skills or learn a new hobby

Our fly fishing lessons are suitable for those who are new to the sport as well as those who are more experienced but are looking to sharpen their skills. Our fly fishing instruction lasts 3 hours and accommodates up to 3 anglers. You are welcome to bring your own equipment, but we can provide everything you need to improve your fly fishing technique.

Guided Hunting Trips

Cast ’n Blast and Other Hunting Trips

Our Cast ’n Blast trip is the biggest adventure you’ll find at Katala Outdoors. Start your day hunting for geese in the morning, then spend the afternoon casting for trout on the river. If you prefer to stay dry, we’ll take you on one of our other hunting trips, where you’ll search for squirrels, turkeys, or deer.
