Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know how to fly fish?
No. We guide anglers of all skill levels. If this is your first-time fly fishing, we are happy to introduce you to this great sport. It's not as complicated as it looks. After some brief instructions from your guide, you will do fine. Our guides are extremely patient, and they are excellent teachers. Your success matters to us.
Where exactly will we fish?
Your guide will discuss location options with you. We will do our best to take your travel time into consideration, but fishing conditions will ultimately dictate where we go. We have multiple options for fishing destinations including
- Tuckasegee River
- Little Tennessee River
- Holston River
- Watauga River
- North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail
- Cherokee Trophy Waters
- Green River - Exclusive fishing on private waters
What should I bring?
- Weather-appropriate clothing. This region is considered temperate rainforest, so bring a rain jacket just in case.
- Lunch or your preferred snacks (guides will provide water, soft drinks, and light snacks).
- A hat or cap.
- Polarized sunglasses for seeing fish and rocks (even inexpensive ones are great).
- Fishing license.
- Cash to tip your guide.

- Rod, reels, and flies.
- Boats (for float trips).
- Boots and waders (for walk and wade trips).
- A helpful attitude and plenty of expertise.
Can I bring my own fishing gear?
Sure, if you have your own gear like boots, waders, rods, reels, etc., you are welcome to use it. Feel free to rely on our guides for those details if that is easier for you.
Can I fish with spinning gear or other tackle?
Yes. This trip is customized for your preferences, so we can fish whatever gear you prefer. Just let your guide know your preferences.
What if there is bad weather on the day of my trip?
Rain typically does not impede the fishing unless it is a torrential downpour. Your guide will make the determination if conditions are safe for fishing or not. We are happy to raincheck your trip or issue a full refund if your guide decides it's not safe.
Is the terrain challenging?
Most of the areas we fish are relatively easy to access, but some rivers have slick banks and rocks. Your guide will ask questions regarding your level of mobility. Please be honest. Your guide will make sure that the areas you fish will not exceed your abilities. If you have concerns about mobility, please chat with your guide. and we will make accommodations.
Are there any age requirements for fishing with Katala Outdoors?
